MARINE MONUMENT OPEN TO FISHING
Earlier this month President Trump reopened about 5,000 square miles of ocean called Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument for commercial fishing. This area between New York and Rhode Island had been set aside by President Obama. Trump closed it during his first term and President Biden reopened it. Democrats have indicated that they will reopen when they return to power.
The area has large undersea mountains, and is home to many endangered marine species and irreplaceable marine ecosystems. Trump claims that commercial fishermen have been unfairly treated and need access to compete. Marine scientists and environmental activists are concerned that the dragnets and other equipment used by commercial fisheries will destroy the fragile ecosystems that make this a preserve for endangered species.
The world’s oceans are already under many threats from rising seas, acidification and plastic pollution. Protecting certain areas makes good sense.
