NATIONAL PARK SERVICE HAS A BIRTHDAY

The National Park Service was formed Aug. 25, 1916, by President Wilson to protect and preserve our public lands.  Yellowstone, our first national Park (established in 1872 by President Grant), was managed by others until 1916. We now have 63 National Parks. We also have 135 Monuments, 80 of which are overseen by the NPS alone; three are jointly managed with others, and the rest are managed by others such as the National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service and others. Congress creates national parks and presidents create national monuments. Monuments may have different protections and uses. Kansas has Fort Scott, Fort Larned National Historic Site, Brown vs. Board of Education, Nicodemus National Historic Site and Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. View parks & monuments via sources  listed.
