MAINTAINING NATIONAL LANDS
Consider your favorite National Park, Historic Site or Monument. Your first stop would probably be the visitor’s center where you could see a film, displays and get a trail guide. Perhaps you will pick a camping site and locate the restrooms. You expect all to be clean and ready. Think of the work needed to make your stay enjoyable and multiply it by the number of other parks.
Professional oversight is needed but so are the thousands of volunteers who range from teens to retirees. Some are members of groups like Student Conservation Association, as well as youth groups and special interest groups. These volunteers can assist but, by law, can’t take the place of or substitute for a professional.
Recently, the NPS lost 24% of its staff. More cuts are predicted. America’s treasured public lands are threatened.
