Melting Glaciers and Volcanic Action
Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and other universities have
been researching how the melting of glaciers increases the number and explosivity
of volcanic action.
Previous studies have known about Antarctica, but little has been studied about
volcanoes buried in glaciers in other areas. It seems that thick layers of ice kept
both the magma and the volcanic gas from escaping into the air. In the past, a
volcanic eruption might have resulted in a cooler atmosphere because of ash in the
air. Now, with a greater number of volcanoes “waking up” at the same time, the
opposite will be true — they will increase the temperature of the atmosphere
greatly. This was study was just presented at the Goldschmidt Geological
Conference in Prague, Czech Republic. Another reason for each of us to reduce our
personal and collective emissions as best we can.
