Conserving Waters
These very warm summer days can quickly add to your
family’s water usage and increase costs. However, there
are ways to reduce usage and cost. Watering in the early
mornings or evenings will reduce evaporation. Consider
drip irrigation or soaker hoses to reach the roots more
easily. Avoid cutting your lawn too short. This will retain
moisture better. Water only when necessary and avoid
excess runoff into storm sewers.
Many are turning large lawns into more diverse zones,
especially using native plants that require less water. A
rain barrell full of rainwater will help water your garden.
Trees can also shade your yard, reducing water usage.
Inside your home, you can watch for and fix leaks
immediately, turn off water when brushing teeth or
shaving, take short showers, run dishwashers when full,
use correct water levels for clothes washers, and scrape
dishes instead of under running water.
