WHAT IS AGRIVOLTAICS
Agrivoltaics is the term used for a cooperative arrangement between solar panels and traditional farm crops, grazing or beekeeping. It should not be confused with a “solar farm” that refers to a large expanse of just solar panels. There have been many new developments in size. Solar panels can be raised high enough to allow machinery to be used for harvest — especially for low growing crops like lettuce, other greens and berries. Solar panels also provide shade that reduces irrigation costs and is helpful in a warming climate. Upfront costs are expensive and require cooperation with others, including zoning departments. One creative sheep rancher found he could herd his flock to an existing solar farm for good grazing. Beekeepers, likewise, can locate hives close to existing solar arrays along highways that have often been planting wildflowers under these panels. Results are more pollinations and sweet honey.
Earth Steward Action: Consider solar. In the meantime, use solar-powered outdoor lights.
