Shrinking Data Centers’ Environmenal Footprint
Nobody wants to give up streaming movies, texting, or sending videos of your cousin’s wedding — and nobody wants to end scientific research. Thus, we will continue to need data centers. However, a lot of the environmental, impacts can be reduced. Here are some ideas to consider:
Circulate a coolant directly through the microchip’s heat-generating components. (New non-water formula is being developed.)
Either use solar and wind to augment other energy sources, or build sustainable sources (like solar farms) that benefit the data center and the surrounding community.
Develop systems that recycle water as much as possible, limiting total water usage. Always preserve local watersheds.
Partner with the local community to develop ways to transfer heat (directly or through coolants) to homes.
Build centers with sustainability in mind and recycle worn parts.
Be sure backup generators run on renewable energy.
