NATIONAL MONUMENTS SLASHED AGAIN
In 2017, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments were reduced in size (87% & 45%) but returned by President Biden to their original size in 2021. This June, President Trump slashed the size of these Monuments by 90%. This action opens the area to mining and development (especially coal and uranium).
Environmental organizations, scientists and Native American tribes are suing the government for restoration. The area is sacred to native tribes, is home to rare plant and animal species, protects the area water supply and provides outdoor recreation space. Some Utah policymakers are fine with the cut, touting the added income from mining and development and still “giving” Native American tribes 10% of their homeland.
It is good to remember that presidents create national monuments and Congress creates national parks. Can a president undo a monument at will? The courts will decide.
