HOW MICROPLASTICS ENTER OUR BODIES

Microplastics are tiny bits of plastic measuring 5 mm or less. There are four main ways these tiny bits find their way into our bodies: ingesting, inhaling, contact through the skin or from indirect sources.

We drink from plastic bottles that leach tiny bits of plastic, we cut veggies on plastic boards and cook with non-stick pans that flake, and we eat seafood and animals that have eaten plastics. We eat crops grown in soil treated with synthetic fertilizers or sludge containing plastic fibers and irrigated with contaminated water. We inhale microplastics from construction, and road and agricultural dust. We inhale car exhaust, carpet and plastic shower curtain pollutants. Our bodies absorb bits of plastics from body care products and may (not proven) introduce fibers from synthetic clothes through cuts or abrasions.

This is quite a list — but remember these are tiny and we can avoid some.
